It comes up in almost every consultation. Someone has seen both Onda Pro and XERF on our website or in their Instagram feed, both promise a firmer and more sculpted result without surgery, and both sound impressive. So which one do you actually book?
The honest answer is that Onda Pro and XERF are not really competing. They work at different depths, on different tissue, using different physics. Most of the confusion comes from the fact that “tightening” shows up in the marketing for both. Once you understand what each device is reaching for under your skin, choosing becomes a lot simpler.
Here is how we explain it at our San Gabriel office, and how our team decides which one belongs in your plan.

The 30-second version
Onda Pro goes deep, into the fat layer. It is the one you want if the concern is a pocket of stubborn fat, cellulite, or loose tissue on the body: abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, or under the chin. It simultaneously treats the fat layers and tightens skin.
XERF works on the skin’s structural layers tightening and encouraging collagen production, including the deep foundation that supports the face and body skin. It is the one you want if the concern is sagging skin, a softening jawline, crepey texture, or a neck that has lost definition.
If you pinch the area and what bothers you is volume, that leans Onda Pro. If what bothers you is slack, that leans XERF.

What Onda Pro actually does
Onda Pro is the only aesthetic device powered by Coolwaves, a 2.45 GHz microwave frequency. That number matters more than it sounds. Most energy devices have to push through the surface of the skin to reach anything below it, which is why so many of them require aggressive cooling or numbing. Coolwaves are absorbed far more readily by subcutaneous tissue than by skin, so the energy effectively passes through the epidermis and does its work underneath, in the fat layer.
Down there, the energy targets the membranes of fat cells and stimulates a tightening response in the surrounding tissue. Onda Pro carries up to 200 watts of power, with continuous contact cooling built into the handpiece plus contact sensors and real-time temperature feedback.
The device ships with three handpieces, and we frequently use more than one in a single session:
- Pocket, the newest addition, treats to a focal depth of about 3 mm for lifting, contouring, and skin radiance
- Shallow, the versatile everyday handpiece
- Deep, built for larger areas like the thighs and the backs of the legs
Onda Pro is manufactured in Italy by DEKA, part of El.En. SpA, and distributed in the United States and Canada by Cartessa Aesthetics. More than 4,500 Onda devices are in use worldwide, and the Pro generation is the redesign that came out of those years of clinical data.
Commonly treated with Onda Pro: localized fat deposits, cellulite at all clinical grades, skin laxity and orange-peel texture on the body, post-pregnancy abdominal laxity, residual fat after weight loss, and the submental area (double chin).
What XERF actually does
XERF, from Cynosure Lutronic, is the world’s first multifrequency monopolar radiofrequency treatment. Rather than running at a single frequency, it combines 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz, which lets it place energy at the shallow, middle, and deep layers of the skin instead of concentrating it in one band.
That reach is the point. Histological analysis from clinical studies confirms XERF delivers energy to the SMAS, the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System, which is the foundational layer beneath the skin that does much of the work of holding the face up. In-vivo studies measured internal temperatures of 50, 60, and 70 degrees Celsius using ultrasound-guided fiber-optic imaging, and follow-up analysis confirmed collagen remodeling with thickening of collagen bundles at multiple depths.
Two features make the experience unusually comfortable for a monopolar RF treatment. Wave Fit pulse and Advanced Integrated Cryogen Delivery hold the surface temperature steady while energy goes deeper, which is why XERF is a Never-Numb treatment: no needles, no numbing cream, no waiting 45 minutes in a room with a face full of lidocaine before anything starts. The system also uses Accurate Impedance Feedback to read your skin in real time, and offers three depth settings and ten intensity levels, so the settings are genuinely built around your skin rather than a preset.
Commonly treated with XERF: face and jawline, neck, décolletage, and body areas including the abdomen, arms, and thighs.
Onda Pro and XERF side by side
| Feature | Onda Pro | XERF |
|---|---|---|
| Energy type | Coolwaves, 2.45 GHz microwave | Multifrequency monopolar RF, 6.78 MHz + 2 MHz |
| Primary target | Subcutaneous fat and the tissue around it | The skin’s shallow, middle, and deep structural layers, including the SMAS |
| Best for | Localized fat, cellulite, body laxity, double chin | Facial and neck laxity, jawline definition, crepey texture |
| Typical areas | Abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, buttocks, submental | Face, jawline, neck, décolletage, abdomen, arms, thighs |
| Comfort | Deep, pleasant warmth. Contact cooling protects the surface | Warm and well tolerated. No needles, no numbing required |
| Session length | Varies by area and how many handpieces are used | About 30 minutes, depending on the areas treated |
| Downtime | None. Back to your day immediately | None. Possible mild redness that settles quickly |
| Sessions | Usually a short series | Most see improvement after one. Two initial sessions is a common starting plan |
| When you see it | Some patients notice change after the first session, building over the series | Immediate tightened feeling, with collagen improvement over 3 to 6 months |
| Consumables | None required in routine use | Single-use tip dedicated to each patient |
What “no downtime” really means
Both treatments are genuinely zero-downtime, and we mean that in the ordinary sense, not the marketing sense. You can come in on a lunch break and go back to work.
With XERF, some patients leave with mild redness that fades quickly. There is no peeling, no bruising, and no post-care routine to manage. Because there is no numbing step, room time is shorter than comparable tightening treatments that require it.
With Onda Pro, the sensation during treatment is a deep warmth rather than heat on the surface, because the cooling system in the handpiece is counterbalancing what is happening underneath. Afterward, the treated area may feel slightly tender or warm for a short time, similar to how a muscle feels after a good massage. Nothing that stops you from going to dinner.
Neither treatment restricts you from sun, exercise, or makeup in any meaningful way, and both can be done year-round, including through a Los Angeles summer.
How many sessions will I need?
This is where honesty matters more than a tidy number, because the truthful answer depends on your tissue and your goal.
For XERF, most patients see visible improvement after a single session. Our typical starting recommendation is two sessions, adjusted for the area and what you are trying to achieve. Collagen keeps rebuilding for months afterward, so the result you see at three months is usually better than the one you see at three weeks. We have had patients come in expecting to be sold a package and leave being told one session was enough, which is a conversation we would rather have than the alternative.
For Onda Pro, body work is generally planned as a short series. Cartessa’s published clinical photography documents results after one, three, and four sessions from different physicians, which gives you a sense of the range. Some areas respond quickly, others benefit from more. Your exact plan gets mapped at consultation rather than guessed at from a webpage.
Do you have to pick just one?
Often, no. The two address different problems, so combining them is common rather than exotic.
A patient six months past a significant weight loss might have both residual fat and loose skin on the abdomen, which is an Onda Pro conversation. That same patient may want the jawline and neck addressed, which is XERF territory. Someone preparing for a wedding might do body contouring on a longer runway and add facial tightening closer to the date.
Sequencing matters, and that is a clinical decision. Our registered nurses build the order and spacing around your timeline.
Why patients come to Eve for both
We are unusual in offering both technologies under one roof, and in the depth of experience we have with each.
Two Onda Pro devices. Onda Pro is available at only a small number of practices nationally, and Eve is one of just four locations in Southern California with the technology. After launching our first device, demand was high enough that we added a second, making us the only medspa in the country running two. Cartessa published a case study about that decision. In practical terms, it means you are not waiting weeks for an opening.
Flagship XERF location. Eve was among the first clinics in the United States to offer XERF, in direct collaboration with Cynosure Lutronic as the flagship treatment location in the Los Angeles area. We have completed more than 200 XERF treatments.
A free Aura 3D imaging scan before you commit. Rather than asking you to decide based on a mirror and a hunch, we start with a photo-realistic 3D capture of your face and neck that analyzes facial structure, skin quality, and volume changes. It is a much better basis for the Onda Pro or XERF question than guesswork, and it costs nothing.
An RN-led team that will tell you no. Our medical team builds plans around what your tissue actually needs. Our reviews mention this more than they mention any device, and that is on purpose.
Care in your language. We serve patients in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and we are open seven days a week from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm, which makes us practical for patients coming from Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra, Temple City, Monterey Park, San Marino, and across greater Los Angeles.
Frequently asked questions
Is Onda Pro a weight loss treatment?
No. It is a body contouring treatment for localized fat, cellulite, and laxity in specific areas. It works best for people near their stable weight who have areas that have not responded to diet and exercise.
Will XERF work on darker skin tones?
Yes. XERF is designed to work across skin tones. Because it uses radiofrequency rather than light, melanin is not a limiting factor the way it can be with some laser treatments.
Which one is better for a double chin?
It depends on what is creating it. If there is genuine fullness under the chin, Onda Pro treats the submental area directly. If the chin and jawline have softened because of skin laxity, XERF is the better fit. Sometimes it is both, which the Aura scan helps clarify.
Do the results last?
Both build collagen, and collagen improvement is long lasting but not permanent, since aging continues. Fat cells treated with Onda Pro do not return in the same way, though weight gain affects remaining cells anywhere in the body. Most patients maintain with periodic sessions.
Is either treatment painful?
Neither requires anesthesia or numbing. Patients typically describe both as warm rather than painful. If discomfort is a concern for you, say so at consultation, since settings are adjustable on both devices.
How do I know which one I need?
Come in and let us look. The consultation is complimentary, and the 3D scan is included.
Individual results vary. Treatment plans are determined during consultation with our medical team.
